Bali Ha'i may call you,
Any night, any day,
In your heart, you'll hear it call you:
"Come away...Come away."
Well this is no South Pacific, let me tell you. This is debauchery at its finest folks. We are talking pikey/Bogan/white trash central. Now, I know this is not politically correct and using such words may be offensive, but that is the only way I can paint this picture. When Ally came here in 2004, it was nothing...just 2 main streets with shacks and she stayed in a place for 3 pence a day. Wow, have things changed. I think she might be a bit sad about that, as this is now like Benidorm is for English people and Can Cun is for Americans...there is nothing by windy roads of shops/restaurants/hostels/clubs...repeat, repeat, and repeat some more! It is dizzying and over stimulating and super duper expensive. Every night there are fights and all the sunburned girls get out their best slut gear and squeeze into outfits that are too short and tight and boys get into their board shorts with nothing else to show off their sunburns and less than impressive tattoos and thy walk up and down the streets trying to decide which club/bar/karaoke to attend and where to get drunk and laid...it is GREAT for people watching, but not much else. Ally and I spent the better part of the first 36 hours trying to find the cheapest place to stay. We met some people from Spain on the airplane and shared a cab with us to Kuta Beach, the main strip. The guy, also named Alex, was freaking out at how commercial it was and wanted to leave that moment, but alas, it was nearing midnight so that would be impossible. He just complained and complained...we got over him quickly and left them to their own devices. We were kind of excited to see shops and Starbucks (mmm...white chocolate mocha) and a bit more life, but we have now reached our threshold and will be moving on shortly after one more day at the beach (which is gorgeous and it is funny to watch the people taking surfing lessons for the first time). The water is crystal blue/green and you can see right through it so no peeing in it like in India (just kidding, we never peed in the sea in India...well maybe Ally did...ok me to). We will spend two more days being very active...the first will be mountain biking deep in a mountain nearby and the second day will be white water rafting in a nearby vigorous lake...very exciting stuff. Then, we will make our way through this island of Java towards the other end to take a ferry or flight to Malaysia for a new country to explore. I think we did Indonesia properly by not giving up and moving around the two main islands (there are more than 1000 in Indonesia) so I am proud of us for that. We have seen some amazing things while being here...and just like in India, it is mostly freakish oddities that stick in our mind. While in India, it was more centred around humans and the deformities and disfigurements that seem to run rampit throughout the whole country, while in Indonesia it seems to be the animals. I have already discussed the stuffed 6 legged 4 headed animals in the museum, but yesterday we saw a real life oddity in the middle of a street. It was two dogs stuck together via the anus...anus to anus...I am not even joking. Everyone was laughing (I wanted a pic, but Alex felt that was unacceptable and would hurt their feelings), but it was unbelievable. We initially thought they might have been mating and it went array, but we soon discovered that they were just literally stuck...we threw some water on their backsides to try and maybe loosen them up to pull apart, but it was only after buckets upon buckets of water were splashed on them that they managed to separate...what a site. Those poor dogs...we have thought about it and discussed it and we think the more mangy white dog with matted dreaded fur, had some sort of sticky puss filled infection and the other dog just happened to walk by and slip on a banana peel, falling onto the white dogs ass rendering itself stuck! There is just no other explanation. We will continue searching for and reporting to you live from Southeast Asia on all of the amazing animal oddities so stay tuned.

You probably should have taken a few pictures of the dogs & sent them to the National Enquirer.
ReplyDeleteCould have made a few 'pence! Not sure I can watch the movie South Pacific again or hear that beautiful song Bali Hai, without conjuring up the images you have so vividly described! Thanks, Melissa!!! Have fun in Malaysia! Can't wait to tell Carole that you're visiting her home country. She'll be so excited! Love you, Mom xxx
