We are back in business baby!
Today was the first day we have actually been able to function on some sort of normalish level...and it has been really great. I have to be honest in the fact that this Dengue Fever left me feeling quite depressed and I am not one for depression so today was a very good day in helping me break through the dark haze I have found myself in. We ate a nice breakfast of porridge and some cereal and then walked around to a 65m high golden Buddha...they just love to build these massively huge Buddhas everywhere. Today is some special Buddhist holiday so most tourist spots are free for today only and tuk tuks offer a reduced price due to petrol coupons they receive from the government. We kind of temple hopped for a bit longer and then took the number 15 bus to another area of Bangkok where there is a house belonging to a man named Jim Thompson, who was an American who brought Thai silk to America from Thailand and popularized it after World War II. After he joined the army and spent time in Thailand and Asia, he fell in love with the people and the culture and decided to live there permanently. He was a Princeton trained architect and had such an eye for art and design and his house is a tribute to that. He then mysteriously disappeared while touring around the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia (had we known, we would have searched for his body) in 1967. They have since made his very cool house into a museum and we went there today for a tour and some snaps and then walked around the MKB shopping centre and ate a tasty sandwich and some ice cream (yes, Alex ate some too). We felt exhausted by this point so we went to see a movie called Devil in the poshest movie theatre we have ever been to. There were only 6 seats per row...they were leather and huge and they reclined, and you were given a warm cotton blanket that smelled like detergent to snuggle up in. We were given complimentary fruit punch cocktails and although they were blue in colour, they were tasty and free. The movie was actually very entertaining about a group of people who get trapped in an elevator with the Devil and then they all mysteriously die one by one...kind of scary, and kept our interests. We took the bus back to Khoasan Road and shopped around the various market stalls and I bought a new pair of flip flops to perk myself up and soon we will be off to sleep, as this has been the busiest day we have had in over a week and we are exhausted. Tomorrow, we are going to go to the Golden Mount, which has 444 stairs that takes you to a viewpoint of all of Bangkok and then we will see a Lady Boy show. We will be taking those stairs slowly and steadily, as we are still weak so hopefully we will make it to the top without event! Due to the Dengue Fever, we have lost a lot of time and decided that travelling through to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam would be too time consuming and expensive so we will just stay put in Thailand and island hop from one gorgeous tropical paradise to another...decisions are the worst, aren't they, hehe?!? This way, we will save money, rest and relax and I will get to form a better opinion of Thailand, as all I really have to base my opinion on is 2 forms of hell...the Muay Thai kickboxing and the Dengue Fever. Really isn't too fair so I will give it these next few weeks to formulate a more well rounded opinion and we will just have to come back and travel through Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam during another adventure. Truth be told, we did lose a bit of momentum after this fever and felt a bit knocked off the horse, so to speak. We are finally beginning to feel like ourselves again and can eat a bit more and do a bit more and that really does make so much of a difference within ones spirit. It may sound ridiculous, but even when travelling around the world with no work stress or much of anything to think about but yourself and what adventure to have that day, you can get quite sad and you do find things to worry about. Hopefully those days are behind us for now and we can move forward and find new adventures to focus on and leave the past week or so behind in a cloud of dust.

Hi Melissa & Alex! It's so good to hear that you are on your feet once more! Dengue Fever sounds horrific & it's probably due to the fact that you are strong & healthy that you are out and about so quickly! I think you made the right choice about staying put for a while. Sounds like there's lots of see in Thailand! Take care of each other! Lots of love & hugs, Mom xxx

ReplyDeleteHi ladies, I am so glad to haer that you are no longer down in the dumps. I don't like this depression situation that you speak of. Not the Melissa I know. And since you are out of the woods, I shall share this with you-my coworker is from Thailand and informed me that she contracted the Dengue Fever when she was in her 20's and she almost died from it. You gals are two tough cookies!
